Hortense yearns for a new life away from rural Jamaica, Gilbert dreams of becoming a lawyer and Queenie longs to escape her Lincolnshire roots.
Small Island follows their lives through the Second World War until the arrival of HMT Empire Windrush at Tilbury, where hopes for the future soon meet the stubborn reality of post-war Britain.
MY ROLE
I worked on the show as a hair & makeup assistant. Before each performance, I was responsible for tidying up the male wigs and fake moustaches. I also helped blocking all the other wigs as there were around 20 hair pieces being used backstage.
My plot's responsibilities on the half and during the 3h run encompassed putting on/taking off the wigs & toupees for Franny (Rebecca Lee), Woman (Chereen Buckley) -pictured below, Miss Jewel (Sandra James-Young) and Miss Ma (Flo Wilson).

My path during the show also included pinning in the hats during quick changes and tidying up the hair in between scenes.
