I worked as a member of the pre-production team for Othello (dir. Clint Dyer). I was assigned creating prosthetics design for the lead actor Giles Terera that was meant to be placed on his back. The reference for them was 1920s photos of slaves whose skin reacted to the constant back whipping in the form of keloid scarring.

I also sculpted 3 facial scarification pieces that were meant to go under his eyes on both sides of the face.

In the end, for the sake of the application time, we as a team had to simplify the design and go for painting the scars on the face and make the back prosthetics more straight-forward and without the edges. For the process pf making silicone transfers, see the video below.
